Origin of Life: Liposomes as models for the first cell: what can we learn from it?

Abstract: Life on earth exists for about 3.5 billion years. The first living matter was a single cell. We do not know, how it looked like and we will never know it, as all traces are gone. The research field of “Origin of Life” asks what were the conditions on earth to allow the great experiment “making life” in the lab “earth” lasting for many million of years and with a lab space of 510.100.000 square kilometers to succeed.

Most questions in this research field are concerned with the first metabolism and the first compartments and how did this happen at the same time at the same place in this big lab. We had been investigating together with a research group in Rome /Italy how this could have happened by using liposomal techniques as a model for processing the first cell membrane.
